Artist Statement

I was born in Seoul, South Korea and got my bachelors degree at Miami University, Oxford, OH in printmaking and currently working on my Masters at SCAD, Savannah, GA in graphic design.

Most of my work is hugely about animals and also human forms. The ongoing theme is showing the basic animal instinct that is also inside human mind, which can come down to the idea of Animalism. Even the human ideal and mentality evolved over time while going through many events both physical and mentally, I believe that at the extreme moment human boils down to the animalistic instincts such as sex and food, because I strongly believe because of the fact that human’s are also animals that man lacks spiritual nature. Most of the objects of my works are visually disturbing animals such as reptiles, deep sea creatures, and mammals such as pigs and these animals are merged into a human body. The grotesque nature of the animals mimicking human behavior both gives a visual shock value to the viewer while it also reflects the ugly-side of human beings which everybody all has inside.

My work processes are both digital and traditional, which is mostly done in illustration and printmaking, which both are done in a way trying to show a traditional style such as Victorian drawings that I am highly influenced. The work is done in thin lines, most of them done in black and white which is also a way to fallow the style of old drawings. By mimicking the old traditional style, I am trying to express that ‘animalism’ is something that is not new, and has always been within history throughout time close with society, or even anywhere that man has existed.

I enjoy watching B-rated horror / gore / splatter movies and listening to music, I am higly influcenced by buddist paintings and japanese prints and many other traditonal art. And eventhough I'm atheist religion and myths enterestes me. I am also a huge fan of underground culture and pop art. And yeah, I'm also a game geek.
